HERE'S OUR LATEST FUNDRAISING WHEEZE!

Popski's Private Army was formed in Cairo in late October 1942 and became operational at Kufra on 10 December, so 2017 is the 75th anniversary year of PPA's formation. Over the last 14 years foPPA, enthusiastically supported by PPA and other veterans, their families and fans, has raised nearly £75,000 for the PPA Memorial Fund. This has enabled the organisation of our annual Remembrance Events and the building and unveiling in 2008 of the PPA Memorial in the Allied Special Forces Memorial Grove, a beautiful remembrance quarter that has become one of the main features of the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

However, since the PPA Memorial was unveiled, it has been somewhat battered by the weather and flooding and we would like to restore it, as well as add new plaques and maybe a bench or two. All this costs money of course, and we would like to have all this accomplished by November 2018, for the 10th anniversary Remembrance Sunday of the PPA Memorial. Our initial budget for this work is £5,000. Please donate generously for your PPA 75th Anniversary Commemorative enamel pin badge.

The British Royal Legion Poppy Appeal kindly produce for us PPA-badged Poppy Wreaths. The wreaths will be shipped directly to the address that you supply to us, but please allow up to ten working days from the date of your order. The price includes donations to the Poppy Appeal and the PPA Memorial Fund.

These are the wreaths that we lay at all of our PPA Remembrance Events but we hope that, over the coming months and years, they will also be laid at the graves of PPA veterans by their relatives and friends, on whatever date seems most appropriate.

Each wreath comes with a weatherproof transparent message pouch so you can add your own personal tribute, but included in the price is an A6-sized Wreath Card (see the template below, not to scale) that we will print and laminate for you with the PPA veteran's details and your own name at the bottom, sent separately to your address, ready to fix to the wreath.

This latest edition of Corporal Ben Owen's With Popski's Private Army includes an intriguing new chapter on "Trooper X", an unnamed deserter from PPA. The book describes Ben's time in Captain Bob Yunnie's 'B' Patrol as his gunner throughout the Italian Campaign, starting when he was injured by an anti-personnel blast that killed his pal Jimmy Hunter one dark night South of Monte Cassino. After the war he became Popski's driver in Vienna and then later was effectively the PPA historian, keeping in touch with many PPA veterans (as a prolific letter-writer and wry poet) and attending reunions until his death in 2008, just before the unveiling of the PPA Memorial. Ben generously handed over to foPPA his "Astrolabe Publishing" papers and the rights to this book to support the PPA Memorial Fund.

Signalman Les White's From the Workhouse to Vienna, is privately published by his daughter-in-law Anne. It is subtitled "A British 20th Century personal story of social and military history", and it's a cracking good tale of Les' time growing up in service, learning to speak German while working in a Swiss hotel, joining the army and becoming a signaller, being recruited by Popski in Tunisia, fighting in Lieutenant Reeve-Walker's "S" patrol in Italy and ending up in Vienna, all against the backdrop of the women in his life. Les, up until his death in 2008 shortly after Remembrance Sunday, and his family have been strong supporters of the PPA Memorial Fund from the start.
